A Gallery of Ghostly Tales

October 1     Ghost Story   (1981) 1 hr 50 min. at Mary J Benson Branch

Four men form the Chowder Society; membership requires telling a scary ghost story. The four are lawyer Ricky Hawthorne (Fred Astaire), his partner Sears James (John Houseman), Dr. John Jaffrey (Melvyn Douglas), and businessman Edward Charles Wanderley (Douglas Fairbanks, Jr.). When Edward’s son, David, falls from a window after the girl he’s sleeping with turns suddenly into a hideous demon, Edward grieves. Then the four Society members have unsettling nightmares…and things get darker.

This is the final film of veteran actors Melvyn Douglas, Fred Astaire, and Douglas Fairbanks Jr. (Astaire and Douglas are both mentioned in the Peter Straub Ghost Story novel the movie is based on. The pipe organ is the same organ played by Lon Chaney in The Phantom of the Opera (1925).
