Originally released in black & white under the title of THE GREAT RUPERT, the film was primarily admired at the time for its then-artful blend of live action and puppet animation to create Rupert the squirrel. When a slightly miserly landlord takes to hiding his savings he inadvertently intrudes into a squirrel's nest—and it wastes no time in shoving the money out of its nest into the hands of the down-on-their-luck Amendola family, led by Louie (Jimmy Durante) and Rosalinda (Terry Moore), who rent an apartment below.
One of Durante’s last film roles. Co-star Helen Koford was credited for the first time as “Terry Moore” in this movie, which was shot in 1948. Her career was so hectic that she didn’t see this film until over 35 years later when Margie Little, Jimmy Durante's widow, ran a private print for her.
